Both *Avatar: The Way of Water* (2025) and *Avatar: Ashes* (2026) are box office hits at the end of the year. James Cameron, in *Avatar: Ashes*, has more skillfully utilized
48fps VFR (Variable Frame Rate) to resolve the abrupt frame rate transitions in some dialogue scenes of the previous film, making the large-scale battle scenes even more thrilling. With so many film versions available, which one should you watch?
What are the movie versions ?
Avatar: Ashes was released in eight versions: IMAX HFR 3D, Dolby Cinema HFR 3D, 4DX, MX4D, D-BOX 3D, HFR 3D, standard 3D, and 2D.
This also sparked my curiosity about how many versions of the movie there are, and I wanted to know the differences between each version, so I did some research and compiled the following information.
Why does “Fire and Ashes” need 48fps?
In The Way of Water, we witness the smoothness of flowing water; while in Fire and Ashes, the visual focus shifts to flames, smoke, and erupting ashes .
- Eliminate flickering: Traditional 24fps is prone to producing visual “jitter” or “ghosting” when displaying rapidly jumping flames or erupting volcanic debris.
- VFR (Variable Frame Rate): Cameron made more subtle use of VFR technology this time . During dialogue scenes, it returned to 24fps to maintain a cinematic feel, while switching to 48fps during action scenes. This made the Ash People’s movements through the firelight extremely realistic, as if the heat and smoke were right in front of you, without feeling like a fast-paced “soap opera”.
- However, some users have reported that VFR (Variable Frame Rate) sometimes makes the image appear less refined and choppy.
In the past, we only needed to know which movie to watch, but now people have a much higher demand for sound and visual effects. Digital 2D Movie
This is the version offered by most theaters, and it’s the version people choose unless they have a specific need. Traditional movies were played on film, but now most have been converted to digital signals. 2D movies mostly use 2D cameras.
Digital 3D Movies
Compared to digital 2D movies, digital 3D movies require 3D glasses for viewing. Different filters are used for each eye to achieve a 3D effect. Many films today don’t use 3D lenses during filming; instead, they create a 3D effect through post-production. However, this is usually more suitable for animation, as it looks less jarring. If *Avatar: Ashes* is only labeled “Digital 3D,” it’s highly likely to be the traditional 24fps version. In this version, fast-paced battle scenes might cause slight dizziness.
HFR 3D Movies
Normally, movies run at 24 frames per second, which makes the image appear smooth and natural to the eye. HFR stands for High Frame Rate, which adds more than twice the amount of frames to the original 24 frames per second, making the image sharper, clearer, and the sense of speed more pronounced. Films like Ang Lee’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” and “Gemini Man,” which run at 120fps, were specifically made for large-screen 3D movies.

IMAX movie
IMAX is a giant-screen movie developed by the Canadian IMAX Corporation. Besides its large screen size, it also uses a special coating. Projected onto the giant screen via laser, IMAX film is ten times larger than traditional 35mm film, which has a higher resolution and produces exceptionally clear and natural images. Therefore, even on screens ten times larger than those used for 35mm films, it delivers perfect projection with sharp, grain-free images that make the scenes feel more realistic. 4DX movies
4DX technology, developed in 2009, adds realistic environmental effects to the viewing experience, enabling a more comprehensive presentation of specific scenes. 4DX effects are divided into two types:
- “Dynamic Seating Effect”
- “Environmental effects”.
The dynamic seat effect allows viewers to directly experience the dynamic changes in the movie through the movement of the seat in three dimensions, while the environmental effects can use water mist, smells, wind effects, and smoke to create a sense of realism as if they were there. Compared with ordinary movies, 4DX provides a richer and more comprehensive sensory stimulation for moviegoers.
